Summary
Landcare - CarbonSMART's view on the role of carbon offsets in addressing climate change"Carbon offsets are one of a suite of options required to stabilise atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxideA greenhouse gas that is produced as a by-product of oil and gas production, burning fossil fuels and biomassBiomass is non-fossilized and organic biodegradable material that can be used as fuel or for industrial production. Most commonly, biomass refers to plant matter grown for use as Biofuels, but it also includes plant or animal matter used for production of fibres, chemicals or heat. Biomass may also include biodegradable wastes that can be burnt as fuel. , as well as from all animals, plants, and a number of other natural sources. Carbon dioxide is the principal anthropogenic greenhouse gas that affects the earth’s temperature.. The activity of carbon sequestration ought to be considered more broadly; Landcare CarbonSMART supports non-harvest, biodiverse plantings across Australia using indigenous species, including understorey, to rehabilitate land, protect waterways and reduce the rates of accelerated erosion. The vegetation provides habitat for our threatened fauna and flora and will assist in slowing species decline (numbers and quality) as a result of climate change. Australia has an exceptional sensitivity to global warming and large scale revegetation activities provide a crucial ecosystem service that will buffer our environment against the threats posed by a changing climate.
Landcare CarbonSMART is an organisation trading on a not-for-profitIn the Carbon Offset Guide not-for-profit entities must have appropriate legal status, which means that they must have a formal structure; be self-governing; be private; be non-profit-distributing; and have some meaningful degree of voluntary involvement. basis that supports large scale revegetation through revenue earned from carbon trades. The target audience for Landcare CarbonSMART is landholders wishing to undertake revegetation activities that meet scheme eligibility criteria. Corporates wishing to purchase carbon must produce a sustainability report or documented evidence of a commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions with offsets as part of a complete reduction strategy. Landcare CarbonSMART does not trade with on-sellers or brokers."Detailed InformationClick on the tabs below for more information:
