    Summary

Greening Australia (Breathe Easy Now)'s view on the role of carbon offsets in addressing climate change

"Greening Australia recognises that climate change is the biggest threat facing Australia’s biodiversity rich, productive landscapes. Traditional environmental concerns of biodiversity loss, salinity, soil erosion and water quality decline are now being exacerbated by this threat.

Greening Australia delivers a Biodiverse Carbon product to the market from well planned and managed biodiverse native forest carbon sinksAny process which removes a greenhouse gas from the atmosphere. Major sinks include forests and other vegetation..

Greening Australia works to facilitate improved productivity through carbon mitigation activities that are integrated across farm land-use systems at the property and landscape scale. We implement projects where a diversity of sustainable land uses co-exist to maximise the ecological, social and economic benefits to the local community.

Greening Australia has developed a Biodiverse Carbon standard, which is peer reviewed by high profile ecologists, as a guide to forest sink establishment quality and outcomes. Our targeted carbon plantings not only sequesterThe uptake and storage of carbon from the atmosphere. For example trees and other plants sequester carbon dioxideA greenhouse gas that is produced as a by-product of oil and gas production, burning fossil fuels and biomass, as well as from all animals, plants, and a number of other natural sources. Carbon dioxide is the principal anthropogenic greenhouse gas that affects the earth’s temperature. from the atmosphere as they grow, through the process of photosynthesis. carbon dioxideA greenhouse gas that is produced as a by-product of oil and gas production, burning fossil fuels and biomassBiomass is non-fossilized and organic biodegradable material that can be used as fuel or for industrial production. Most commonly, biomass refers to plant matter grown for use as Biofuels, but it also includes plant or animal matter used for production of fibres, chemicals or heat. Carbon dioxide is the principal anthropogenic greenhouse gas that affects the earth’s temperature. but also help degraded landscapes to recover from years of degradation, and become more resilient as they adapt to global climate change.

Importantly, we focus on biodiverse plantings of a mix of species, under stringent guidelines requiring bioregion-specific native species selection, appropriate for the landscape they are planted in, offering multiple benefits for the environment.

Greening Australia is one of Australia’s largest environment orgainisations and is working at the forefront of the implementation of climate change adaptation and mitigation. On a daily basis we engage with farmers, landowners, community, business and government on a range of activities that contribute effectively to positive environmental and carbon outcomes."

Habitat 141 is a bold landscape scale project. It seeks to restore the links between major national parks and nature reserves over a 700 km stretch straddling the SA, NSW and Victorian border region.

This area encompasses a diverse range of ecosystems including rangelands, heath, mallee, red gum forests and floodplains, grassy woodlands through to the limestone rich coastal plain.

These landscape scale works are guided by the latest conservation planning expertise and science, and initiated through partnerships with most of the major environmental conservation organisations across the landscape.

The aim of this project is to protect and restore the native vegetation on the 186ha property ‘Nurcong’. By doing so, it will directly contribute to the following Conservation Action Plan (CAP) objectives for the West Wimmera Woodlands and Wetlands (Zone 2):

    (i) Restore vegetated linkages between the Little Desert and Grampians NPs via the Tooan – Mt Arapiles Parks Complex. This linkage will help facilitate the movement of the endangered Mallee Fowl between known populations found in the Nurcoung Flora Reserve and the Little Desert NP.

(ii) Ensure 30% of pre-European extent of broad vegetation groups by protecting, enhancing and restoring 30,000 ha of Grassy Woodlands by 2058. This project will permanently protect 5 ha of remnant and restore 10.5 hectares of the Shallow Sands Woodland. Shallow Sands Woodlands are part of the Buloke Woodlands complex, which are considered endangered under the EPBC Act.

Gondwana Link is an ambitious conservation and restoration initiative located in the southwest of Western Australia (WA). This regional scale effort involves a number of organisations working collaboratively to reconnect and conserve landscapes from the tall wet forests of the far southwest to the dry woodland and mallee systems bordering the Nullarbor Plain.

One area in which operational activities have focused within Gondwana Link is a 70 km section of fragmented mallee and woodland remnant vegetation systems located between the Stirling Ranges and Fitzgerald River National Parks, referred to as the "Fitz-Stirlings". The Fitz-Stirling region provides an excellent opportunity for the practice of ecological restoration at the landscape scale. While land clearing for agriculture has occurred, significant areas (27 per cent) of remnant vegetation are still present.

The Peniup Restoration Project employed a multifaceted approach to re-establish a self-replicating biologically-diverse plant system, ecologically informed in its design, and consistent with the heterogeneous mosaic of plant associations found in the local landscape. The project required fine scale planning, new implementation technology and practices, and a well considered long term research component. Nine vegetation associations were identified to defined plant assemblages that reflected specific soil types and landscape positions.

The 250 hectare restoration project is one of the most ambitious projects undertaken, and is a testament to the vision and foresight of the project managers.

The implementation of this restoration project has been published in:
