Summary
15 Trees's view on the role of carbon offsets in addressing climate change"Through carbon offsetting, individuals and companies can play an important part in addressing the problems of climate change. We can't afford to leave it to the political parties nor big businesses to 'fix'. We all need to take responsibility and ownership of the problem and carbon offsetting is just one way of tackling the problem. Most importantly, our lifestyles need to become more sustainable.
Fifteen trees would like to see carbon offsetting become 'second nature', just like recycling, using low energy light globes and installing solar panels. Carbon offsetting is now a part of our vocabulary and the general public are beginning to see that somehow we have to pay for our carbon emissions.
Our company's role is tied in with local businesses and individuals who want to see a direct benefit within their local community. We purchase our trees from local independent, native nurseries and distribute them to land holders, city councils, environmental groups (such as Landcare), universities and schools for planting on both private and public land.
Our target groups are car dealerships (who offset their small/medium cars for their customers), businesses with fleets and individuals. Through the generous support from businesses and individuals we hope to develop on-going partnerships that benefits the environment and local communities."

In the end the best sites that we found were - the Greenfleet website (www.greenfleet.com.au) and the Australian Department of Climate Change website(www.climatechange.gov.au). Both sites have done the calculations with carbon capturing plants and car emissions. In brief, one small/medium car will emit approximately 4.0 tonnes (4000 kg) of carbon dioxide equivalent each year. Over its lifetime the average tree captures 268 kg of carbon. Therefore, 15 x 268 = 4.02 tonnes. Therefore, you need to plant 15 trees every year that you are on the road. However, there can be a lot of variations within the above calculations. Such as - how fast the tree grows (trees can grow to maturity anywhere between 16 - 20 years), mileage of the car, size of engine, even the type of driving (city/highway). From our research we came to the conclusion that a small economical car needs 12 trees planted yearly and a large car needs 17 trees. We choose 15 as the middle ground, as we only want to offset small to medium sized cars.Relevant third party verification (not accreditation / certification)[Q35] - I am in the process of being accredited and have enlisted Net Balance Management Group.Do you provide quality assurance or technical documentation on your web site or on request?[Q16]Is your organisation audited by an independent third party for the sale and retirement of offsets and / or RECs?[Q16b] NoDoes your organisation supply National Carbon Offset Standard (NCOS) or NCOS compliant abatement to customers from 1st July 2010?[Q18] No
[Q19]What evidence of purchase can customers expect to receive when buying carbon offsets from your organisation?- Certificate for amount of offsetA carbon offset is an investment in a project or activity that reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions or sequesters carbon from the atmosphere that is used to compensate for GHG emissions from your own activities. General Information
[Q28, Q31]Own Project | Projects vary in size - from 60 tree projects to 500 tree projects. The projects are scattered throughout Victoria in regions such as Ballarat, Bendigo, West Gate (Melbourne), Brisban Ranges and Kinglake. The trees are planted by Landcare, community groups (such as schools) and landholders. They are sources from local, independent native nurseries.Price per tonne of CO2e[Q30]15 trees = 4,020 kg carbon captured (268kg per tree)
